Outside funds helping Kelowna with algal monitoring project
The City of Kelowna is undertaking a project to monitor algal outbreaks, thanks to some federal investments.
The Okanagan Basin Water Board said the Central Okanagan city had been awarded $200,000 through Environment Canada’s EcoAction program for a “new regional project focused on monitoring and forecasting harmful algal blooms.”
‘Algal’ is a descriptive term for aquatic, plant-like organisms related to or resembling algae.
The OBWB announced the project in it’s November meeting report, in which it also stated that it would “be a key partner in developing this regional early-warning system aimed to enhance drinking water safety and climate resilience through coordinated monitoring, predictive tools, and collaborative data sharing across the Okanagan Basin.”
