Jun 20, 2017 | 11:47 AM

Enderby Council has confirmed the hiring of a new fire chief.

Mayor Greg McCune says they went within the ranks promoting the Deputy Chief.

“Clifford Vetter has been appointed fire chief for our community and I think that turns out to be a wise and very popular choice. I mean he’s a very popular choice amongst the department.”

Vetter has been Acting chief since former Chief Kevin Alstad left to become full time chief in Sparwood.

McCune says Vetter was an obvious choice.

“He’s been I think 23 or 24 years he says he’s been on the department and served in all roles. He went through everything from the active training side to the paper, promotion. He’s done it all”

The Mayor says Chief Vetter’s experience through the year’s as a volunteer gives him the right credentials

” The biggest key to a volunteer department is just keeping them motivated, making sure the training is what they need and then just in a small community the fire department is just part of the community.”

Mayor McCune says the position will remain as paid on-call fire chief.

He says he’s not sure if the community will evolve into needing a full time chief.

Richard Bastiaansen is rthe new Deputy Chief.

He’s been with the department a number of years and has been a training officer
