Traffic chaos on Highway 97 near Summerland to continue for at least one more summer

Drivers on Highway 97 between Callan Road and North Beach Road will face at least one more season of traffic delays as long-term stabilization work begins at the North Beach rockslide site.

Starting Monday, Nov. 3, crews will repaint traffic lines and adjust cones and lane structures to direct vehicles safely through the work zone. The traffic setup is expected to remain in place until spring 2027.

The project follows the August 2023 rockslide that closed the highway, depositing roughly 3,000 cubic metres of debris onto the roadway. Stabilization work will include rock scaling, controlled blasting, and restoration of four lanes.

During construction, brief highway closures may occur on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., lasting no more than 20 minutes. Drivers are advised to slow down, obey posted speed limits, and follow traffic-control personnel. Oversized loads are allowed on Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday nights from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., with advance notice required.

Highway 97 will remain open to two-way traffic, though additional closures may occur if conditions are unsafe, particularly during heavy rain or snow.
