Multi-Grade Classrooms Studied In North Okanagan-Shuswap

The value of multi-grade classrooms is being looked at in the North Okanagan-Shuswap School District.

A study done buy former superintendent Dave Witt concluded that student academic performance doesn’t suffer from enrolment in a multi-grade classroom.

Official trustee Mike McKay says support for teachers and communication with parents is key.

“Strategic decisions being made and recognizing that as populations change and as we want to keep our smaller schools open, multi grade and or multi age needs to be a strong option.”

He says that can’t be a default or a second choice.

McKay says students involved do just as well as in single grade classes.

Success is tied to teacher support.

“That goes to the teacher’s passion and skill and the c-e-a’s commitment in the classroom. So, what we need to do is make sure that people aren’t, the adults aren’t overwhelmed with trying to juggle too many curricula.”

“Kids can be doing some of the same things, using the same resources and engaging at different levels depending on their individual level, depending on their age and their grade assignment.”
McKay says there are lots of places where multi grade classes are thriving and a place where parents want their kids to be.
