Young Bikers Can Get ‘Positive Ticket’

RCMP around the North Okanagan will be rewarding children for displaying good bike safety.

Cpl. Tania Finn says the Positive Ticket Program will start this Saturday and continue until September 6.

“When our members are out of patrol, if they see any children that are wearing their helmets and biking safely, they are going to stop and have a conversation with the child, and issue them a positive tickets for a free ice cream cone or frosty at one of the participating restaurants,” Finn tells Kiss FM.

Finn says their sponsors on the program are McDonald’s, Wendy’s, A&W and Burger King.

She says when biking, a properly-fitted helmet is the best way to prevent head injuries and death.

“Ensure your child’s helmet is worn level and covers their forehead. The straps should be fastened and adjusted so they are snug under the chin.”

Parents should also to check to ensure their child’s bike fits and the seat is adjusted to their height.

“Teach your child to follow the rules of the road, use hand signals and always stay visible.”

Other behavior that will also warrant a positive ticket includes kids walking their bike across cross walks, having proper reflectors and lights, and riding with courtesy to pedestrians and motor vehicles.
