Lakes Are Down But Challenged By Wind

Okanagan Lake has recorded a smaller decrease in the past 24 hours compared with Tuesday night`s dip.

Environment and Climate Action Canada says the lake dropped 5 millimetres to 343.213 metres above sea level.

The level of Kalamalka Lake this morning was recorded at 392.306 metres, down about 10 centimetres from the 392.408 metre mark yesterday morning.

Officials are warning with powerful winds due today flood defences are going to be challenged.

Southerly winds gusting to 60 kilometres an hour are in the forecast.

In some areas, gusty winds have caused extreme wave action pounding sandbags, gabion cages and tiger dams set up by residents and local governments.

People should leave their flood protection in place and check on them daily.

As needed, repair and replace them to ensure adequate protection from wave generated erosion and flooding.

Residents and businesses that have been impacted by flooding, may qualify for financial support.

Applications to the Provincial Disaster Financial Assistance program must be submitted to Emergency Management BC by August 5th.
