Outdoor Education Could Expand

The North Okanagan -Shuswap School District may see more outdoor education classes in the future.

Official trustee Mike McKay says the program is gaining ground as children become more engaged with learning.

He says it’s a highly structured, effective way to learn

“Classes are out for the full day. It’s not a field trip to go and see something, but to run through their day’s work tied into their natural surroundings,” McKay tells Kiss FM.

McKay says it’s been found to help children who have trouble learning in an enclosed classroom.

He sees the district becoming a lighthouse for outdoor education in the future.

Meantime, McKay admits this school year has been a complex one.

Tuesday Night’s board meeting included a recognition of outgoing Superintendent Glenn Borthistle.

Borthistle announced in April he was leaving.

He’s being replaced by Peter Jory.

McKay was brought on in June of last year as official trustee when the school board was fired.

“I’ve been so appreciative and impressed with the welcome I’ve had, and the fact that people have been prepared to roll up their sleeves and work with me.”

McKay says everybody wanted to be positive and work to make a difference for kids.
