Update: Westside Road Fire ‘Human Caused’

Update 12 pm:

Twenty-six provincial firefighters are still working at the scene of a grass fire near Westside Road in West Kelowna.

The BC Forest Service says the Blue Grouse Mountain fire is being held at 2 hectares.

Two fire cause and origin investigators are also on the scene.

While there’s been reports of an abandoned campfire in the area, the cause is still under investigation.

Update: 6 am

Investigators are looking to talk to whomever was in what appeared to be a hastily abandoned campsite right in the area where a wildfire started on Blue Grouse Mountain along Westside Road Tuesday near West Kelowna.

More than two dozen firefighters, along with fixed wing aircraft and helicopters kept it from growing more than 2-1/2 hectares at last report.

The BC Forest Service says it appeared to be human caused.

Campfires are still permitted but they have to be small and kept under control.

Update: 4:30 pm June 13:

Good news on a fire along Westside Road near West Kelowna.

The BC Forest Service says it’s being held at 2.5 hectares in size.

Information officer Jody Lucius says the number of fixed-wing aircraft being used has been reduced down to 5, with two helicopters and four aircraft released.

There are still close to 30 provincial firefighters on scene in addition to municipal crews from West Kelowna and Wilsons Landing.

The cause is under investigation.

Update: 3 pm

Crews from the BC Forest Service are helping firefighters from West Kelowna and Wilsons Landing on a small grass fire on Blue Grouse Mountain along Westside Road north of Kelowna.

The BC Wildfire Service has two air-tankers and a three-member Initial Attack crew on site.

A helicopter is also dropping water onto the flames.

1:30 pm:

The BC Forest Service is responding to a wildfire on Westside Road.

It is on Blue Grouse Mountain outside of West Kelowna.

Information officer Justine Hunt has the latest.

“The fire is currently .009 hectares in size and is in full response. We have three firefighters, one response officer and one air tanker responding,” she tells Kiss FM.

Hunt was not able to say if there are any homes or structures nearby, and didn’t yet any information about the terrain it was in.
