Okanagan faces extended heat wave as wildfire risk rises

Aug 21, 2025 | 10:26 AM

The Okanagan region is bracing for a prolonged stretch of hot, dry weather that will push temperatures into the mid 30s over the coming days. Kelowna is expected to reach 34 degrees Sunday and Monday, with highs holding in the low 30s through the middle of next week.

Nights offer little relief, keeping temperatures above 10 degrees, and the persistent heat is raising concerns about increased wildfire risk across the valley.

Vernon is seeing similar conditions, with sunny skies and highs climbing from 28 today to 34 by Sunday and Monday. Overnight lows in Vernon will remain in the low to mid teens, and the hot, dry pattern is also heightening the threat of fires in the surrounding forests and grasslands.

Residents across the region are being urged to stay alert, avoid outdoor burning, and take precautions to stay cool and hydrated during the heat wave.

With no significant rainfall expected and the sun dominating the forecast, officials warn that the dry conditions combined with strong summer heat could accelerate fire activity in both urban and rural areas of the Okanagan.
