Swimming advisory issued for Rotary Beach in Kelowna
City officials have issued a swimming advisory for Rotary Beach in Rotary Beach Park due to higher than recommended bacterial levels in the water. The beach remains open, but advisory signs have been posted so that visitors can make informed choices.
Ed Hoppe, water quality and customer care supervisor, said the increase is linked to greater waterfowl activity, plant matter, and higher water temperatures in this area of Okanagan Lake. People most at risk include young children, older adults and anyone with a weakened immune system.
Testing shows that E. coli bacteria levels have exceeded the threshold of 235 units per 100 mL, the maximum allowed under B.C. Recreational Water Quality Guidelines. If ingested, these bacteria can cause gastrointestinal illness in about one per cent of swimmers, as well as more frequent eye, ear and throat irritation or skin rashes.
Officials said above water activities such as paddle boarding and kayaking are not affected, and other Kelowna beaches remain safe for swimming. Beach water quality is tested weekly, with increased testing during advisories, and signs remain posted until levels return to acceptable limits.
