Mental Health Week to be marked with events in Vernon

Apr 24, 2025 | 10:06 AM

A block party and film screening will be held in Vernon to mark Mental Health Week.

The Vernon and District branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA Vernon) will host a community get-together to bring awareness to the week that runs from May 5 to 11.

“We are excited to bring the community together as a way of shattering stigma around mental health and creating connections with those around us,” said Julia Payson, CMHA Vernon’s executive director.

The celebrations will go on May 8, starting with the annual Block Party from 12 to 2 p.m. in front of the Museum and Archives near Vernon City Hall. There will be hamburgers available by donation, live music, and information about local mental health services.

The celebrations will move to the Vernon Towne Theatre for the screening of the cult classic film, Bring It On, starting at 6:30. The theatre will donate 100 per cent of the box office profits to CMHA Vernon.

The theme of the 2025 Mental Health Week is Unmasking Mental Health.

“Mental health challenges often mean people are hiding behind a mask to avoid judgment and discrimination. But as the stigma becomes heavier, so does the mask, which creates more isolation,” Payson said.

“That’s why it’s important for all of us to look beyond the surface and consider the whole person. Through honesty and vulnerability, deeper connections are formed, and positive mental health benefits are created.”
