GoFundMe campaigns launched to support people who lost homes in Cherryville fire

Two online fundraisers have been launched to support people who lost their homes in a fire in Cherryville.

One GoFundMe campaign was launched on behalf of Kenny and Sharon Martin, after a fire in the Cherryville Estates trailer park destroyed two homes around 2:45 a.m. Friday, Feb. 14.

The campaign said the couple lost their home of 30 years and all their possessions, and need help to rebuild their lives. It added Kenny was passionate about fishing, but lost his boat and fishing gear in the fire, and the fundraiser hoped to raise enough to replace those items.

Another GoFundMe was also launched for the Martins’ neighbour, who was not named in the campaign.

The fundraising initiative said the man’s home and possessions were destroyed, including cherished memorabilia from his parents and late wife.

It added the man was elderly and living with a disability, and facing a large task in recovering from the fire.

People wishing to donate to the Martin GoFundMe can do so here, and donations for the other man can be made here.

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP said the cause of the fire was still undetermined as of Wednesday, Feb. 19, though it was believed to be accidental in nature. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
