Housing construction in Greater Vernon saw significant declines in 2024.

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) reported seven housing project starts locally in December, 2024, bringing the yearly total to 265 starts. Those projects were all single family homes.

The starts last December were down from the nine recorded in the same month of 2023.

Additionally, Greater Vernon saw annual housing starts decline from the previous year, which CMHC reported as 343 projects.

British Columbia saw a similar trend, with 3,743 starts in December and 43,575 new housing projects throughout 2024.

That was down from the same periods of 2023 which saw 4,954 starts in the final month of the year and an annual total of 47,895 housing project starts.

However, that wasn’t the case for the whole nation.

CMHC reported 16,531 housing starts across Canada this past December, which was down from the 18,593 recorded in the same month the year prior.

However, Canada saw a total of 227,237 starts recorded throughout 2024, up from the previous year’s total of 223,197.

CMHC’s data showed Alberta, Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia all saw significant gains to housing construction on a year-over-year basis in 2024.
