Sitkum Creek wildfire in the North Okanagan grew Thursday, more resources assigned

The B.C. Wildfire Service continued to action the growing wildfire northeast of Lumby Thursday, with more members on the scene.

The BCWS told Vernon Matters that 24 wildland firefighters were assigned to the western flank of the fire near Sugar Lake as of July 25. The ground operations were being supported by one bucketing helicopter.

The provincial firefighting service had estimated the fire at being 1,993 hectares in size as of around noon Thursday, up from 1,501 hectares at the same time the day prior.

The weather turned wetter and cooler throughout the day, which Aydan Coray, a fire information officer with the BCWS, told Vernon Matters did help decrease fire activity in areas that saw precipitation, though added the fuels were still dry and that firefighting crews

However, she also noted that fuels were still dry, and that crews would be monitoring any spread from gusting winds in the evening and overnight.

Coray added there had been no reports of members at the scene being concerned of the fire spreading as of Thursday afternoon.

The Regional District of North Okanagan’s Evacuation Order remained in effect for the east side of Sugar Lake recreation area, while an Alert was also still in place for the western shore.
