New student housing for Okanagan College

Jul 10, 2024 | 1:00 PM

A 101-bed student-housing project is coming to Okanagan College in Penticton.

B.C.’s Ministry of Post-Secondary Education says it means students on that campus will have access to affordable on-campus housing for the first time.

It says the province is contributing all but $500,000 of the total $24-million cost to build the building, which will use mass timber.

The project should be ready for students in fall 2026.

“Having an affordable place to live and the supports that come through student housing is going to be a game-changer for learners in the South Okanagan and throughout the Interior who want to attend our Penticton campus,” Neil Fassina, Okanagan College president, said.

“This new building will make attending post-secondary programs more possible for more students, whether they are studying and training for careers in health care, trades, science and technology, or business.”

Meantime, 100 beds of student housing is on track to open at the Okanagan College Vernon campus this fall.

At the same time, students will be moving into a 216-bed project in Kelowna and a 60-bed project on the Salmon Arm campus.
