Vernon area crash did not pose contamination risk to creek

An incident that saw a vehicle go off the road in the BX did not pose any contamination risk, according to environmental officials.

BX Swan Lake Fire Rescue was called to the scene of a single vehicle crash on Tilicum Road near the Cedar Falls Campground at approximately 4:40 p.m. Monday, June 10.

“We responded with a rescue unit and an engine, which is the normal protocols,” Bill Wacey, BX Fire Chief, told Vernon Matters.

“We arrived on scene to find both occupants were out of the car, they were uninjured.”

The car had gone off the road and into a ditch on the creekside of the road, which raised concerns of oil and fluids leaking into, and contaminating, BX Creek.

“At the end of the day, it was determined by Environment Canada, which we had contact with, that they were satisfied that it was going to be a non-issue,” Wacey said.

“They determined that it wasn’t enough to be concerned about it.”

The fire department was on the scene for approximately an hour and a half, during which one lane was closed and the other lane was used for alternating traffic.

Wacey said the fire crews had left the scene before the vehicle was extracted.

The cause of the crash was undetermined, with Wacey stating that would be up to police to investigate.

The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP told Vernon Matters that no officers were dispatched to the scene of the crash Monday.
