Dog alerts resident to fire which destroys trailers and barn

A barn and some trailers were a total loss after a fire Sunday night on Wallace Road in the B.X.

BX-Swan Lake Fire chief Bill Wacey said it started in an old trailer parked beside a barn.

“It had a heavy fuel load in the area and once it took hold, it was certainly well established when the fire department showed up,” Wacey told Vernon Matters.

He said the cause was accidental but undetermined and not suspicious.

“There was a lot of things in the building, and surrounding it, and they were all lost, so fairly substantial [losses]. There is no insurance involved so I can’t really give you a good guesstimate.”

The fire chief said a man was in the trailer at the time of the blaze.

“And it’s a good thing he’s got a well-trained dog because he didn’t notice it, and the dog came in and started grabbing at his ankles and pulling him. And he looked up and saw what was going on, and he escaped because of the dog.”

Wacey said just his department responded to the fire, and he says they were fortunate to keep the blaze from spreading to the nearby forest.

“Some trees candled around it, but it was damp enough around it, to allow them to get a good foothold on it. And there was no wind. Again, we dodged a bullet when it comes to the Silver Star corridor,” Wacey remarked.

Wacey said the fire started in the back end of a trailer, but because everything was so destroyed, the cause was undetermined.
