FireSmart actions planned for city property, public info session set

May 15, 2024 | 11:30 AM

The City of Vernon will be taking action to reduce the risk of wildfires, and is encouraging others to do the same.

FireSmart work is planned for city-owned lands, and members of the public are invited to an information session to learn about the process.

“By taking proactive measures now, we’re not only protecting our own homes but also creating a safer environment for everyone in our community,” Wes Brassard, Vernon’s FireSmart Coordinator, said.

The city stated taking preventative measures, such as removing hazardous fire fuels, reduces the risk of property damage and helps mitigate the economic and ecological impacts of wildfires in the long-term.

“The importance of community-wide participation cannot be overstated,” Fire Chief David Lind said.

“Wildfires pose a significant threat not only to individual properties but to entire communities. By creating a culture of FireSmart practices and collective action, we can significantly enhance our community’s resilience to wildfires.”

The session will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, at the Civic Memorial Park building at the corner of 30th Street and 39th Avenue.

Representatives from the B.C. Wildfire Service and Vernon Fire Rescue Services will be in attendance to answer questions from the public.
