It’s not even May, but the 2024 B.C. wildfire season is well underway.

The first major, out-of-control wildfire of the season has now grown to 1,600 hectares, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS).

The Burgess Creek wildfire was discovered Saturday (Apr. 20). It is located about 45 kilometres south of Quesnel, northwest of Ben Lake and east of Highway 97.

The Cariboo Regional District does not list any emergency alerts or evacuation notices for this or any fire on its website.

Meantime, a wildfire discovered Saturday near Oliver (Dutton Creek) in the South Okanagan reached 4.3 hectares and is now classified as being held, meaning it is not expected to spread further.
