Fire hall funding plan supported

Electors have given their support to a plan to borrow up to $8 million for a fire hall replacement project (#32) in West Kelowna.

The City of West Kelowna said the official results of an alternative approval process (AAP) showed that 68 eligible elector response forms were received at City Hall prior to the 4:30 p.m. March 21 deadline.

That was less than the required 10 per cent of the 28,098 (or 2,810) electors needed to derail the process.

The city said council can now consider proceeding with the long-term borrowing, with no new tax increases to the community.

Civic officials said eight invalid elector response forms were received which were due to incomplete responses (name, address and/or signature), duplicate responses, and elector ineligibility (e.g., address not in West Kelowna or signed on behalf of a corporation).

The city said the current Fire Hall #32 is 53 years old and well beyond its useful life as a protective services facility.

The venue responds within an 8-kilometre circumference including to Westbank First Nation properties in addition to back up for Fire Hall #31 coverage areas.

In June 2023, it was announced that a site on Anders Road had been selected as the preferred location for the #32 replacement.

Further information regarding the official results and the outlining of next steps is provided in the March 26 council report.
