Parkinson Rec pool to close due to boiler failure

Public pool users in Kelowna will be displaced until January.

The City of Kelowna said the pool and aquatic area at Parkinson Recreation Centre would be temporarily closed due a boiler failure that requires immediate attention.

The section of the facility will be closed starting Monday, Oct. 23, and will remain closed for eight to twelve weeks to complete the repairs.

All other areas of the Rec Centre will remain open during the work, though the city warns there will be no hot water in the facility, including in the showers.

“We know this is a major inconvenience for our community and repairs are our top priority right now,” said Mariko Siggers, Community & Neighbourhood Services Manager.

“We are working hard to get the pool back up and running as soon as possible, but we also need to ensure the safety and reliability of our building. We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding during this time, and we are committed to providing up-to-date information about how repair work is progressing as the weeks unfold.”

The issue affecting three of the five boilers that provide hot water throughout the building was discovered during routine annual maintenance.

Residents registered for swimming lessons and other aquatic classes will be contacted to discuss plans for their programs. Members will also be contacted to discuss options for their memberships.

People looking to take a dip while the work to repair the boilers is undertaken are encouraged to use the Kelowna Family YMCA at 375 Hartman Rd. or at the H2O Adventure and Fitness Centre at 4075 Gordon Dr.
