Some evacuation orders changed to alerts in Kelowna, update on fires, damage expected this morning

A news conference will be held at 10 a.m. this morning (Aug. 21) in Kelowna to update the wildfires in the Central Okanagan.

The Central Okanagan Emergency Operations Centre will hold the conference with representatives from local fire services, the BC Wildfire Service and Emergency Support Services.

The news conference will be live streamed at https://www.youtube.com/@regionaldistrict/streams.

The news was good at Sunday’s update as fire officials said the cooler weather and less wind, were allowing crews to make progress on the McDougall Creek fire in West Kelowna, along with the fires in Kelowna and Lake Country.

Another good sign came Sunday evening as about 60 properties were moved from evacuation orders to alerts, allowing them to go back home in the Quail Ridge Boulevard area, and in the UBC Okanagan District.

As of the last update, there was still about 10,000 properties evacuated from the Central Okanagan, with ten thousand more on alert.

At last update, Kelowna International Airport was expecting flights to be cancelled today until 9 p.m. after allowing some flights to get in and out overnight.

Travellers are advised to check with their airline for updated flight information.
