Military Tattoo celebrates milestone at Vernon shows

Jul 5, 2023 | 7:00 AM

The Okanagan Military Tattoo returns to Kal Tire Place in Vernon to celebrate its 10th annual event July 29 and 30.

The show packs a punch, and will be a thrill to history buffs and music lovers alike.

“The Tattoo is an event that will stir the heart and feed the soul, so get ready for two hours of heart pounding, fast paced family entertainment. It’s Vernon’s largest annual indoor event and western North America’s only Military Tattoo,” Derek Hall, society vice president, said.

Hall said traditionally, military tattoos have provided the opportunity for civilians to witness the precision and professionalism of those who have dedicated their lives to the defense and security of their country. In recent times, tattoos have become more inclusive with civilians participating in athletics, music, dancing and choirs.

The term “Tattoo” evolved from a European tradition dating back to the 17th century when the Low Country innkeepers would yell “doe den tap toe” meaning “turn off the taps” as the fifes and drums of the local regiment signaled the soldiers to return to their quarters.

The RCMP “E” Division Pipes and Drums are attending this year as the event celebrates the 150th anniversary of the founding of the RCMP. Other headliners include the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy and the regimental band of the 15th Field Artillery.

Also participating are contingents from the Canadian Scottish Regiment, the Seaforth Highlanders and the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders, BC Dragoons, Rocky Mountain Rangers along with the Okanagan Tattoo Dancers, singers, City Dance performers and local First Nations.

“While the performance itself is a major draw, the primary focus of the event is to pay tribute to military members and their families both past, present and future,” Hall remarked. “The location is particularly relevant since Vernon is home to an expansive Department of National Defence facility that has trained tens of thousands of soldiers and cadets for more than 100 years.

New to the Tattoo this year will be the addition of two 11 by 20 feet video screens high and on either side of the “Castle.” No matter where you sit, there will be close-up action shots on the screens. The video images will also play an important part in some of the segments, especially the annual Tribute to the Veterans.
