May 8, 2023 | 4:45 PM

About two dozen high school students are in Vernon this week, getting a glimpse into what a career in law enforcement would be like.

The students, aged 16 to 18 from around the valley, are taking part in the annual Jean Minguy Youth Academy at the Vernon Army Camp.

“So far, they’ve been given their uniforms, started sorting out their accommodations (including a bed making demo) and have done a lot of running,” a posting on the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP’s Facebook page stated.

The students are being put through simulated police scenarios, physical training and receiving basic instruction in police tactics, use of force and community policing principles.

in addition to careers in policing, some students over the years have also had an interest in criminology, the conservation service and law.

The academy is named in honour of RCMP Constable Joseph Martial Maurice Jean Minguy, who lost his life while on duty in Vernon on June 3, 2005.
