Parent company of Okanagan Spring recognized for environmental committment

Sleeman Breweries has been named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers.

The parent company of Okanagan Spring Brewery in Vernon and the third-largest brewer in Canada made the top 100 list of Green Employers thanks to its work to protect the environment.

Sleeman’s was recognized for a number of measures and initiatives it has in place such as having established and launched an environmental policy in 2022, diverting 97 per cent of its waste from landfills, having national and local ‘Green Teams’ organize environmental initiatives and education, upgrading equipment and modifying the brewing process to conserve water, and being energy efficient through the use of delivery routing software.

The brewing company noted the environmental policy focuses on reducing its impact on climate change, promoting and committing to reducing, reusing and recycling, and using employee and community engagement to find and follow through with actions to sustain the natural environment.

Sleeman’s operations in Guelph, Ontario, treat 100 per cent of its effluent waste streams on site, which the company said minimizes the load on municipal water systems.

“Sleeman Breweries’ commitment to environmental sustainability is a cornerstone of our organization,” Hiroaki Kitaoka, president and CEO of Sleeman Breweries stated in a release.

“It matters to our leaders, our employees, and our consumers. Earning this recognition shows Canadians that Sleeman values our planet and is making business decisions that will have a positive impact for future generations.”

This is the second time Sleeman Breweries was named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers. The beer company first earned the designation in 2019.

Sleeman Breweries, which is owned by Sapporo Breweries of Japan, operates breweries in Guelph, Ont., Vernon, B.C., Calgary, A.B., and Chambly, Que.
