Discounted dog licences until next month

Jan 3, 2023 | 2:30 PM

Central Okanagan dog owners can save themselves a few bucks by renewing or buying a 2023 licence over the next few weeks.

Until Feb. 28, a licence for a dog that’s spayed or neutered costs $20. If the dog isn’t spayed or neutered, the fee is $60. On March 1, licences return to the regular annual rates of $40 and $80.

You can visit rdco.com/dogs and click on the dog licence link to get started.

People can also buy or renew their dog licence in person at the Regional District office in Kelowna (1450 KLO Road), the Regional Dog Pound (890 Weddell Place), or municipal offices in Kelowna, West Kelowna, Lake Country, and Peachland.

The Responsible Dog Ownership Bylaw requires all dogs three months and older to be licensed and in 2022, over 25,000 were. A licence makes it easy to return a dog to its owner if it gets away. It also provides a one-time free ride home. As well, there are special discounts and services offered by participating local businesses for licensed dog owners showing their digital My Dog Matters rewards card.

License fees help reunite dogs and owners, the care of lost dogs and public safety and awareness initiatives supporting responsible dog ownership.

Dog owners that have moved to the Central Okanagan and have a current, valid dog licence from another local government may transfer their licence for free by visiting the RDCO office in Kelowna.

Dog owners are encouraged to keep their licence up to date as there is zero tolerance and a hefty fine for unlicensed dogs.
