UPDATE: 6:30 p.m.

A vehicle was destroyed after catching fire along Highway 97 in Coldstream this afternoon.

The Coldstream Fire Department responded south of College Way around 4 p.m. with fire chief Fiona Morgenthaler-Code saying the fire appeared to be caused by a mechanical issue.

She said the two occupants escaped safely, but the car was a “total loss.”

“Highway 97 [northbound lanes] was closed briefly as we aggressively fought the fire which was limited to the vehicle itself and thankfully did not spread to the surrounding area,” Morgenthaler-Code told Vernon Matters.

The highway was reopened to single lane traffic north bound with RCMP and traffic control on scene.
