National Day of Mourning

Vernon’s municipal buildings to close for Queen Elizabeth’s funeral

Sep 14, 2022 | 1:16 PM

In recognition of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral and the national one-time holiday, the City of Vernon will close its municipal buildings on Monday, Sept. 19.

The city follows the lead of the federal and provincial governments to observe the National Day of Mourning and pay respects to the Head of the Commonwealth who served for 70 years.

Some recreation facilities and programming will continue as previously scheduled, and recreation services staff will contact users to provide updates on the services and programs available.

The municipal buildings, including city hall, will reopen for regular business hours on Tuesday, Sept. 20.

Flags will continue to fly at half mast until sunset on Monday, the day of the Queen’s memorial service.

The Canadian Government has launched an online book of condolences that the public can sign and leave a short message.

Coldstream and Kelowna have also announced municipal buildings will close Monday. No other area municipalities have confirmed closures as of time of publication.
