Vernon Search and Rescue tracks down elderly man

Vernon Search and Rescue (VSAR) were able to assist in locating an elderly man who recently went missing.

The VSAR Group Society posted on Facebook that the man, who was in his seventies, walked away from his home in East Hill on Thursday, Aug. 4, but then became disoriented and lost.

The man’s family could not locate him despite a search of the neighbourhood and surrounding area.

The RCMP was called and VSAR were tasked with helping to find the man.

It was then determined that the man was last seen walking near Highway 6 in Coldstream, approximately six kilometres from his home.

VSAR volunteers were dispatched in teams in vehicles and on bicycles to search the area, and within two hours they had traced the senior’s movements to a spot another six kilometres away past Kalamalka Beach.

However, VSAR learned that concerned residents in the area had seen the man and attempted to help by calling a cab, which took him to his previous address near Swan Lake.

VSAR responded to the area and found the man, who was in good health, and reunited him to his family.

VSAR suggest families of people with Alzheimer’s or dementia have them carry a card with updated contact information and a home address so if they do get disoriented and lost, they can be quickly reunited with their loved ones.

Additionally, family members are encouraged to have a list of a person’s favorite places, habits and history, as well as a recent picture, to assist search and rescue teams in the event that a family member does go missing.
