E-dirt bikes removed from Kelowna’s streets

Local police have removed e-dirt bikes from the roads following an incident in Kelowna.

RCMP said officers were out doing routine traffic safety patrols during the week of May 18 when they came across three underage riders operating e-dirt bikes dangerously in traffic.

The riders then fled from police, but were later tracked down and apprehended without incident.

The three e-dirt bikes were seized and are subject to civil forfeiture, while the youth face significant financial penalties under the B.C. Motor Vehicle Act.

“Traffic safety remains a focused priority for the Kelowna RCMP, with specific attention on high-risk driving behaviour,” Corporal Steven Lang, Kelowna RCMP’s Media Relations Officer, stated.

“When necessary, our officers will take appropriate enforcement action to help prevent a tragic collision in our community.”

The seizure of the e-dirt bikes came following increased complaints from residents and RCMP increasing enforcement of high-risk micromobility vehicle use.

Police reminded the public that e-dirt bikes and mini-motorcycles cannot be insured or registered and are not allowed to be ridden on roads, sidewalks or bike lanes.

Kelowna RCMP added it was working to address concerns relating to these types of vehicles through proactive enforcement with a strong focus put on safe intervention and education about where these items can be used, their safety requirements and legal obligations, and the potential liabilities of improper use.
