Enderby to ban campfires Thursday

Aug 2, 2022 | 3:05 PM

The City of Enderby will issue a campfire ban to coincide with the regional ban.

The ban will take effect at noon on Thursday, Aug. 4, the same time the campfire ban issued for the Kamloops Fire Centre will take effect.

The ban applies to the City of Enderby and the Shuswap River Fire Protection District.

The new regulations align with the regional prohibitions and build off the open burning ban that took effect on July 15.

Under the new prohibitions, campfires, open burnings, fireworks, sky lanterns, burn barrels or cages, binary exploding targets, tiki or similar torches, chimneas, air curtain burners, and outdoor stoves or other portable campfire apparatus without a Canadian Standards Association or Underwriter Laboratories of Canada rating may not be used.

The regulations are consistent with the ban issued for the entire Kamloops Fire Centre, which is being issued as there are high or extreme fire danger ratings across the region.

“Our area is experiencing hot and dry conditions, and the fire danger rating has increased as a result,” said Enderby and District Fire Department chief Cliff Vetter.

“This prohibition will help prevent human-caused wildfires, protect public safety, and ensure that critical firefighting resources are not diverted from lightning-caused wildfires. Preventing wildfires is our shared responsibility.”

The prohibition will remain in effect until noon on October 15, or until the B.C. Wildfire Service rescinds the order.

The City of Enderby also recommends people take action to protect their properties from wildfires through FireSmart activities, and to be prepared to leave in the event of a wildfire by developing a Household Preparedness Guide and having evacuation bags packed and ready to go.
