Merritt Speedway gearing up for new season

The familiar roar of stock car engines will once again be heard from the Merritt Speedway in Lower Nicola this year.

After COVID-19 restrictions hampered races for fans of the sport the past few years, the Merritt Stock Car Association has announced a full slate of races this year, beginning in May.

Dale Calder of the Stock Car Association told Q101 that everyone from racers to the volunteers who help out at the tracks, are excited for racing to start up.

“It’s been a long time coming and we are hoping to get through the entire season with very few restrictions this year,” Calder noted. “Our racers are really looking forward to driving in front of fans this season.”

Calder added that there will different categories for racers including the Junior 4-cylinder class which she hopes will entice more young people to get involved in the sport.

The first racing of the season begins the long weekend in May.
