Two Winter Carnival events cancelled

An overnight fire in downtown Vernon has led to the cancellation of a Vernon Winter Carnival event, one of two that the organizers have had to scrap in the final days of the festival.

The Towne Theatre was to have hosted a free movie event Saturday, Feb. 12, but it’s been cancelled due to a fire in the store next to the theatre on Feb. 10.

“While crews work to figure out the cause of the fire, the Towne Theatre will have to close their doors. Families who registered for this event can call the Carnival office for an exchange option,” said executive director Vicki Proulx.

Also not going ahead is the fireworks which were advertized to be lit-off on the last day of Carnival Sunday, Feb. 13.

“Unfortunately they will not be moving forward,” said Proulx. “We look forward to bringing fireworks back to our community as soon as we can, but we will not be able to provide them for Carnival 2022. Thank you to everyone who was helping behind the scenes to make this happen, we really tried.”
