Interior records one COVID-19 death as cases continue to climb

Interior Health has now seen 307 people die as a result of COVID-19.

The increase came as one death was reported in the region Wednesday. It was among the 13 throughout B.C., bringing the provincial COVID-19 death-toll to 2,505.

Active cases in the Interior also rose to 5,769 Wednesday, as 550 new infections were identified by the health authority.

The cases were part of 2,387 recorded province-wide (increase of 412 from Tuesday), bringing B.C.’s active case count to 35,770.

Hospitalizations in B.C. also rose to 895 Wednesday (increase of 41), with 115 of those patients in intensive care (decrease of 3). The B.C. Centre for Disease Control notes that 99 of those patients, including 17 in critical care, are located in the Interior.

The vaccination rates in B.C. made slight gains Wednesday, as 89.3 per cent of eligible residents aged 5 and over have received one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, while 83.4 per cent have had two shots.

It’s noted that 92.4 per cent of people aged 12 and over have had one dose, 89.7 per cent have had two jabs and 35.5 per cent have received a third shot.

Additionally, 92.8 per cent of adult British Columbians have received one dose, 90.2 per cent have had two jabs and 38 per cent have had a booster.

The Mount Cartier Court was one of two outbreaks declared over Wednesday, but it was offset by five other health-care facilities being added to the active outbreak list, including the Joseph Creek Care Village in the Interior. As of Wednesday there were 56 facilities with active outbreaks, including eight in the Interior.
