Vernon reaches 37 per cent for children vaccinations

Vernon had one of the highest vaccination rates for children aged five to 11 in the Interior this week.

Data from the B.C. Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) shows that, as of Monday Jan. 3, 37 per cent of kids in the Vernon-Coldstream area had received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

The Vernon area had the fourth highest vaccination rate for children in the Interior after the Okanagan Mission’s 50 per cent vaccination rate, Glenmore’s 43 per cent rate and Penticton’s 39 per cent.

The data on doses for children aged five to 11 also showed that Lake Country had a vaccination rate of 32 per cent, that 24 per cent of North Okanagan-Lumby children had been vaccinated, that Armstrong-Spallumcheen’s rate was 22 per cent, and that Enderby’s vaccination rate was 17 per cent.

Looking across the Interior, Merritt had the lowest rate at 12 per cent Monday, followed by Kettle Valley at 13 per cent, Lower Thompson at 16 per cent, then Enderby.

In total, the Interior’s overall vaccination rate for children aged five to 11 as of Monday was 29 per cent, which is still well below the provincial rate of 39 per cent.

The BCCDC also noted that first doses rates for Vernon-Coldstream residents aged 12 to 17 was 83 per cent Monday, while 78 per cent had received their second dose. Looking at the 18-49 demographic, 81 per cent had received their first dose and 78 per cent had been double dosed. In the 50 and above category 91 per cent of Vernon-Coldstream residents had received a first jab and 89 per cent had two shots.

The BCCDC data also showed that 76 per cent of Vernon-Coldstream residents aged 70 and above have received a third dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. That rate is the second highest in the Interior after Kamloops Centre South’s 78 per cent.

The third dose rate people aged 70 and over for both the Interior region and British Columbia as a whole were recorded at 70 per cent Monday.

Regionally, the Interior’s vaccination rates for residents aged 12 and over were recorded as 87 per cent for first doses, 84 per cent for second jabs and 24 per cent for third shots. Provincially, the rates for British Columbians aged 12 and over were recorded at 92 per cent for first doses, 89 per cent for second jabs and 21 per cent for third shots.
