Discovered during wellness check

Man found dead in downtown Kelowna

A wellness check on homeless people in Kelowna resulted in the discovery of a deceased man on Monday.

Bylaw officers located an unresponsive 34-year-old man near the Queensway Bus Loop in the 1400 block of Pandosy St. at approximately 10:50 p.m. on Dec. 28.

The bylaw officers immediately began administering CPR and gave the man Naloxone. Emergency medical services arrived on the scene and transported the male to Kelowna General Hospital, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The cause of death is not yet known, though Kelowna RCMP say it is not considered suspicious. The B.C. Coroners Service has taken over the investigation into the death.

Kelowna RCMP’s Community Safety Unit (CSU) and bylaw officers have been working together over the past week to conduct wellness checks on people out in the cold and assist them in finding shelter beds if possible.
