Clinical research on Alzheimer’s disease and agitation to go at Okanagan Clinical Trials

Aug 23, 2021 | 12:20 PM

Okanagan Clinical Trials is seeking people living with a combination of Alzheimer’s disease and agitation to take part in a clinical study.

The Kelowna-based medical research company is conducting the study to determine the effectiveness and safety of an investigational medication for this condition.

“People with Alzheimer’s may experience agitation as the disease progresses,” explains Dr. Eugene Okorie, Principal Investigator at Okanagan Clinical Trials, and a practicing psychiatrist in the community.

“There is a great need for more effective medication to treat agitation in Alzheimer’s patients.”

Agitation in Alzheimer’s is usually displayed through emotional distress, aggressive behaviours, disruptive irritability and disinhibition.

“Agitation is one of the most common behaviors that adversely affects quality of life,” said Dr. Kim Christie, President of Okanagan Clinical Trials.

“These behaviours can cause an increase in caregiver burden, so this study provides hope for both Alzheimer’s patients and their care partners.”

Okanagan Clinical Trials is looking for both men and women between the ages of 65 and 90 who have received a probable diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease to participate in the study.

The study-related care and investigational medication will be provided free of charge, and participants will be free to leave the study at any time.

Those who wish to participate in the study can call 240-862-8141 or visit the Okanagan Clinical Trials’ website.
