Okanagan Indian Band lifts evacuation order

Some evacuated residents on the Okanagan Indian Band (OKIB) reserve are allowed to go home.

OKIB issued a news release just after 4:00 p.m. Sunday, saying the Evacuation Order issued on August 6, to the areas north of Louis Estates, has been rescinded.

An Evacuation Alert remains in effect for all addresses listed in Schedule 1 below.

The change in status is due to progress fire crews are making on the White Rock Lake wildfire burning near Westside Road.

The band says an Evacuation Order may need to be reissued; however, if that is deemed necessary, the Evacuation Order process will re-commence.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:

· Pack essential items such as government-issued ID, medications, eyeglasses, valuable papers (e.g. insurance, credit, and mortgage information), immediate care needs for dependents and, if time and space permits, keepsakes for quick departure.

· Prepare to move disabled persons, children and/or neighbors, if assistance is needed.

· Prepare to take pets with you and move livestock to a safe area (if possible).

· Arrange transportation for all your household members. Fill the gas tanks of personal vehicles. Arrange accommodation for all members of the residence, if possible.

· Wait for an Evacuation Order to be issued before evacuating. Monitor website and Facebook page for information on evacuation orders and location of Reception Centres.

· If your animals or livestock have been relocated, call 250-809-9589 to coordinate their safe return
