COVID-19 cases have surged again in British Columbia, with new daily records set over the weekend.

Dr. Reka Gustafson, deputy provincial health officer, reported 352 new cases from Friday to Saturday, 389 from Saturday to Sunday, which is a new record, and 379 from Sunday to Monday.

That’s a grand total over the three days of 1,120 for a provincial total of 15,501.

Of the new cases, 830 were in the Fraser Health region, 234 in Vancouver Coastal, 9 on Vancouver Island, 36 in Interior Health (IH) and 10 in Northern Health.

There are now 2,945 active cases in B.C. with 90 people in hospital and 19 in critical or intensive care.

There are 93 active cases in IH, with no one in hospital.

There are six more COVID-related deaths, five in Vancouver Coastal, one in Fraser, for a total of 269.

“These numbers are concerning for all of us but we have learned a great deal about COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic’, said Gustafson, who was filling in for Dr. Bonnie Henry. “We have learned what living with the virus looks like and how to keep those around us safe.”

Gustafson said as the weather gets cooler and activities move inside, they expect to see fluctuations and surges in some communities.

“We know that being inside and being in close contact with others increases the risks and that has been a significant cause of new cases in recent weeks. That’s why its important to keep groups small at home and elsewhere,” Gustafson added.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 4,898 cases of COVID-19 in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 9,049 in the Fraser Health region, 265 in the Island Health region, 777 in the Interior Health region, 422 in the Northern Health region and 90 cases of people who reside outside of Canada.
