Coldstream Meadows closing 57-unit building

The Coldstream Meadows seniors home will be closing its 57-unit Lodge due to issues created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Owner Jack Borden said the Lodge is the oldest building at the facility, with the original building dating back to a boy’s school in the 1950s, and is no longer a safe place for residents to live.

“Even though Coldstream Meadows and The Lodge have been kept safe from COVID, due to the extraordinary dedication and commitment of our staff, The Lodge has no future as a home for seniors. The cost of updating The Lodge to today’s safety standards would be prohibitive,” Borden told Vernon Matters.

The Lodge will close at the end of February 2021, a decision announced to the residents on Wednesday (Oct. 21).

Borden said 25 seniors are impacted and some will be relocated to the other 75-self-contained units at the site.

“Other neighbourhoods within Coldstream Meadows, for example The Cottages, The Views, The Terraces, and The Bungalows, continue to flourish and provide a safe and secure choice for residents,” Borden added.

Borden said Coldstream Meadows management and staff will be working with residents and their families to ensure that every resident is provided with the best possible option for relocation.

“We’re going to try and accomodate as many as we can at the Meadows. Some may have other options that they want to pursue,” he said.

Borden said the cost would be in the “millions of dollars” to upgrade the old building to meet COVID standards.

Coldstream Meadows is located on Mackie Drive in Coldstream, and opened in 1990.
