Terrifying Toys (Including Trudeau)

Apr 13, 2017 | 6:10 AM

I only ever remember having one toy that was kind of creepy – It was a Teddy Ruxpin. While it was not creepy in and of itself, there was an incident with the batteries.

You know how they say “remove batteries when not in use” well, I didn’t understand that when I was a kid. The batteries we’re left in the toy for years and eventually, they began to leak.

At some point during a purge, or cleaning, or similar, I came across the toy and started fiddling with it to see if it would still work. I open up the battery compartment and saw that the batteries had done what batteries do when you leave them in too long, so I removed and discarded them. The thing is, toy still worked without any batteries at all. Even after I cleaned the battery terminals (and tried to get it to stop working) that bear would still talk and tell me stories – terrifying.

Until I saw this:

A Tickle Me Elmo that has all the fur removed. This is what Terminator must look like when it’s being tickled.

And then, to cap off the “terrifying toys” post, a Justin Trudeau figurine that has a  completely poseable body, and he talks too. The figure says things like

  • A positive, optimistic, hopeful vision of public life isn’t a naive dream, it can be a powerful force for change.
  • Canada is a country strong not in spite of our differences but because of them.

The Trudeau figurine is available through the Bradford Exchange for $130 but they say it’s not a toy, but “a fine collectible to be enjoyed by adult collectors.” I can’t imagine wanting this (or any other politician) on display in my home – though it could be a good gag gift.
