Board Gets Clear Message On Change

Apr 12, 2017 | 3:26 PM

About 55 people turned out Tuesday night to talk about proposed boundary change for two Coldstream schools.

The Vernon School Board wants to change the catchment boundary for Kidston and Coldstream schools.

Board Chair Kelly Smith says trustees heard a clear message

“They felt that the students who attended Coldstream currently shouldn’t be the only ones who are grandfathered. Their siblings should also be grandfathered in.”

The boundary is being changed to shift new students to Kidston, which has more room than Coldstream, which is already full.

“Actually, the boundary line makes a lot of sense because the students within that boundary line actually live closer to Kidston.”

Smith says the idea of portables came up, but that won’t happen.

“The ministry will only allow you to purchase portables if there’s no room in any of your schools. And the ministry is very clear, if there is room in one school, then you’ve got to change the boundaries in order to fill up that school.”

The Board will meet on April 26th to consider the changes.
