More people back at office

B.C. employment almost back to pre-pandemic levels

The B.C. government says 15,300 jobs were created in the province last month, 87 per cent of which were full time positions.

Minister of jobs, economic development and competitiveness, Michelle Mungall, said manufacturing and agriculture jobs made a strong comeback in August, with more than 6,000 people finding work in each of those sectors.

She stated total employment now stands at 94 per cent of the pre-pandemic level in February, and the province’s unemployment rate fell for the third month in a row to 10.7 per cent.

“But we still have a long way to go as many British Columbians are still struggling,” cautioned Mungall, MLA for Nelson Creston.” Our focus on restarting B.C.’s economy in a safe, responsible manner has strongly supported our efforts to battle the pandemic as well as get our economy back on its feet. We are committed to building a recovery that works for everyone, and the next steps in B.C.’s recovery plan will be announced later this month.”

Mungall’s comments were made after the release of Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey for August.

Nationally, the unemployment rate fell from 10.9 per cent in July to 10.2 per cent last month as the economy added 246,000 jobs.

Gains in August were largely in full-time work, and Statistics Canada reports full-time employment is now almost six per cent away from pre-pandemic levels.

More Canadians headed into work instead of their home office, with 300,000 fewer people working from home last month.

The number of people working less than half their usual hours — likely due to COVID-19 — fell by 14 per cent.
