B.C. Opposition calls for early bar service during World Cup games
The B.C. opposition is urging the province to temporarily loosen liquor service rules during the World Cup, arguing bars and restaurants should be allowed to open earlier so fans can watch Team Canada games.
Outgoing interim Opposition Leader Trevor Halford says the change would allow businesses to apply for temporary licences so they can serve customers ahead of early morning matches.
“As we celebrate Canada’s participation in the World Cup, it makes sense to allow bars and restaurants to serve earlier than usual,” Halford said. “Canada’s next game is in the morning, and businesses should be able to apply for a temporary licence that would allow them to serve prior to game time.”
Halford says similar exemptions have been used during events like the Olympics and World Junior hockey championships, and argues the move would boost both fan experience and local business activity.
