The Greater Vernon Chamber of Commerce continues to press the B.C. government to consider a proposal to expand Ellison Provincial Park south of Vernon.

The business group has written to Environment Minister George Heyman, requesting an update on B.C.

potentially purchasing the 234-acre Chelsea Estate adjacent to the park on Okanagan Lake.

Chamber president Kristin Kempton says while they understand the province’s limited budgets and competing priorities, which were cited as reasons not to pursue it by the province. But they also want to reiterate an expansion of the park would bolster tourism, particularly as the sector has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“There is also a tremendous opportunity to protect ecological and recreational values for future generations,” Kempton said.

The chamber said it is prepared to work with B.C. Parks and the ministry to identify potential public and private donors that can assist with the initiative.

“And while acquisition of the entire 234-acre Chelsea Estate is ideal to maximize the long-term benefits for the North Okanagan and province, we would ask that the government consider working with us to purchase at least a portion of the site immediately next to Ellison Provincial Park,” Kempton said.

The estate, on Cameron Road, is listed on Colliers website.

It has 11 different land titles and is located within the City of Vernon.

Vernon council passed a motion earlier this summer, urging the province to consider purchasing the land for inclusion in the park.
