UPDATE Police arrest three suspects after crash with stolen vehicle

Sep 2, 2020 | 3:54 PM

UPDATE 3:54 p.m.

Three people are in custody after allegedly fleeing from police in a stolen vehicle in Vernon Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 2).

RCMP say around 1:20 p.m., an officer with the Downtown Enforcement Unit was on routine patrol when he noticed a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of a business in the 2400 block of 34th Street.

As the officer pulled up to the vehicle, he recognized it as previously reported stolen from a neighbouring jurisdiction. On seeing the marked police car, the vehicle fled from the parking lot in an attempt to evade police. Having recognized the driver, the officer did not pursue the vehicle but advised the other police officers of the incident.

“As our officer was on the radio updating the other units, he heard a noise that sounded like a collision,” said Corporal Tania Finn, media relations officer. “Our officer saw the stolen vehicle had circled the block and collided with an unoccupied vehicle parked roadside on 34th Street.”

Prior to police getting to the crash site, two occupants fled from the vehicle.

“A 28-year-old woman associated to the vehicle was immediately taken into custody and a 43-year-old man was arrested within a block of the incident. The Vernon North Okanagan Police Dog Service attended to assist and the second man, aged 41 years, he was taken into custody in a nearby residential area without incident,” Finn added.

There are no reports of injuries as a result of the incident.

Finn said the three suspects are from the Vernon area and are known to police. They remain in custody as police continue to investigate.
