Numerous police officers descend on rural site

There was a large police presence in Spallumcheen after a report of a suspicious person on a rural property.

The call came into police around 2 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 31) about a possible break-in in the 4200 block of Hullcar Road.

“The complainant advised a man could be seen on video surveillance walking around the property, looking in windows and gained entry to an outbuilding,” said Cpl. Tania Finn, media relations officer for Vernon North Okanagan RCMP. “Frontline officers responded, viewed the video surveillance and obtained a description of the suspect. Given the large rural area, investigators requested the Police Dog Service unit to attend in order to establish a track for the individual.”

Finn said a police dog service unit tracked the suspect from where he was last seen, leading to the unit finding a dirt bike stolen from a different property in some bushes.

“Additional police resources were dispatched to the area in order to establish a perimeter in an attempt to locate the suspect. Despite the heavy police presence, the suspect was not located,” Finn added.

Despite speculation on social media, Cpl. Finn told Vernon Matters, Robert Gordon Heltman “has not been identified as a suspect in the Spallumcheen break and enter.”

“Heltman has not been located by police and we do not know if he is even still in our area,” said Finn.

The 30-year-old Heltman is wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for violating his day parole after an incident in Vernon Aug 19.

The investigation into the break, enter and theft continues. Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or leaving a tip online at www.nokscrimestoppers.com.
