Kelowna cluster 'over'

B.C. Covid update: 294 new cases; 7 in Interior Health

Aug 31, 2020 | 3:36 PM

British Columbia is reporting 294 new Covid-19 cases since Friday, which includes 7 new cases in the Interior.

Most of the new cases were in the Lower Mainland, with just one on Vancouver Island and 12 in Northern Health.

There are now 1,107 active cases in B.C., and there’s been four more deaths, three at long-term care homes.

There are 28 people in hospital with 10 in critical or intensive care.

A total of 2,723 people under active heath monitoring due to exposure to people with Covid cases, and 4,406 people with Covid-19 have recovered.

Interior Health (IH) has 19 active cases, and no one is in hospital.

The outbreak at the Okanagan Correctional Centre in Oliver remains at seven cases (all staff), and two are active.

No IH resident cases are currently associated with the water treatment facility project outbreak in the Elk Valley (declared Aug.27).

Some good news Monday as the Kelowna area cluster that started in early July, has been officially declared over as there’s been no new cases associated with it over the last four weeks.

“Interior Health would like to thank local elected officials, businesses, residents and visitors to Kelowna for their efforts to bring the number of new cases associated with this cluster down over the last month or so. Minimizing the impacts of COVID-19 in Kelowna and all our communities is a collective effort and we encourage everyone to continue following the public health guidance to prevent further spread,” stated IH medical health officer Dr. Silvina Mema.

An outbreak on Haida Gwaii is also over.

Dr. Bonnie Henry, provincial health officer, said with Sept. 1 tomorrow, B.C. is entering a new phase of its Covid-19 pandemic plan.

“The increase in the number of new cases the past few weeks remains a concern for all of us, and we all have to do our part to ensure community spread remains low and that we are actively supporting public health teams to manage new cases,” stated Henry.

Henry is urging residents to slow down on social interactions and prepare for the respiratory season ahead.

“We have talked many times we will likely have a second wave. We see a surge in cases but we’ve managed to keep our curve flat and we need to continue to do that work as we move into our respiratory season.”

Henry says people have to take a “step back” from some of the social interactions they’ve had this summer, and have to rethink gatherings, particularly if indoors, and keep visitors to a minimum.
