Show time again on the big screen

Aug 14, 2020 | 5:39 AM

Five months after it closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Vernon’s Galaxy Cinemas reopens today.

“Not only is it opening, it’s opening in a way none of our other theatres have opened because it’s opening with new Hollywood content,” said Sarah Van Lange with Cineplex communications.

“It’s the first time in nearly five months we’ve had new releases on the big screen and the theatre is going to opening two new titles: Spongebob The Movie – Sponge on the Run and Unhinged,” Van Lange told Vernon Matters.

There will also be 10th anniversary screening of Inception in the lead-up to the premiere of Tenet, Christopher Nolan’s newest movie on August 27.

Van Lange says Cineplex reopened its first theatres in Calgary and Edmonton on June 26, and 137 of their 164 theatres will be operating as of today.

“We are targeting to have our whole network open by end of next week.”

Over the past few weeks, theatres have been running popular recent releases and classic titles like Jaws and Back to the Future.

“This weekend is quite special for the industry because it’s the first time were having new releases back in our theatres.”

Van Lange said a number of health and safety guidelines are in place at their facilities, including allowing far fewer people in the venues.

“Every other row will be blocked off and we’re reducing capacity in our theatres by as much as 60 to 80 per cent.”

You don’t have to reserve a seat, but patrons have that option

“We are rolling out reserve seating across all our auditoriums across Canada so that you have peace of mind. Before you leave your house, you will know exactly where you’ll be sitting and know that there is physical distancing between you and other guests,” stated Van Lange.

Movie goers are asked to show up at least 15 minutes before show times

“We are so excited to be opening our theatres,” concluded Van Lange. “Cineplex has been entertaining Canadians for 100 years and this weekend we’re really getting back to what we do best.”
