Top doc tells visitors to stay home if ill

Visitors to B.C. are not welcome this summer if they are ill.

While the province has entered Phase 3 of its COVID-19 plan which allows for some travel, chief provincial health officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, says anyone showing any signs of COVID-19 should stay home.

“Visitors from other parts of Canada or even within the province, you need to stay home if you are not well,” said Henry said during a news conference on Monday. “Don’t come if you’re not well.”

Henry said this was part of respectful travel manners.

“Now is not the time to travel with any symptoms of COVID-19.”

Henry said B.C. had managed to flatten the curve against the novel coronavirus but now was not the time to let down our guard.

“To be successful and weather this storm, everyone needs to continue to do their part, whether at home, at work or travelling.”

She announced 26 new cases in the province from Saturday to Monday for a total of 2,904.

There have been 200 verified cases in Interior Health.

There have been no new deaths in the province.

When asked about Canadian airlines are ending physical distancing rules on flights, Henry admitted to some concern.

Health Minister Adrian Dix said airlines are the responsibility of Transport Canada and he’s waiting for an explanation about the change.

Following an outbreak at a Vancouver strip club, Henry said public health teams were still trying to track down all of the patrons who had been there between June 21-24.

Three people have tested positive so far.

“In this most recent exposure event, public health teams issued a public alert because we were not able to reach all of those who were in the premises and may be at risk. One slip is all we need to cause a significant rebound and we have seen that happen in jurisdictions around us.”
